Calendar Peculiarities: Why Date Calculation Is Harder Than It Looks
Calculating the date-difference is, in essence, a counting problem. But it's a surprisingly complex one - primarily because of how a calendar year is defined.
Namely, one year is defined as the time planet Earth takes to revolve around the sun once. This is approximately 365.25 days, rather than exactly 365 days. To adjust for this small discrepancy, the modern (western) calendar, known as the Gregorian calendar, includes a leap year roughly every four years to keep the calendar aligned with Earth's orbit around the sun. The rule is precise: a year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except for century years (like 1900), which must be divisible by 400 to qualify (which is why 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not).
A second complication is month length inequality. Even if a year was exactly 365 days, we still encounter the issue that 365 is not divisible by 12 months. Our months range from 28 to 31 days, a legacy of historical and political decisions stretching back to the Roman calendar. This means that "one month" is not a fixed unit of time; the gap from January 31 to February 28 is not the same number of days as the gap from March 31 to April 30. If we wanted, we could divide the year by 5 months, but then we run into the issue that many holidays and remembrance days have already been culturally established on set dates.
